Introduction

Understanding the connection between the Sun and the Earth allows students to learn complex math, science, history and social studies concepts. This activity involves Internet research, creating digital images as documentation, presenting findings with PowerPoint and even creating a Web site to showcase student projects. See examples of student projects from this lesson plan.

Prerequisite Experience

Students should be able to conduct Internet research, use a digital camera and be able to upload images to a computer. Students will use these images in PowerPoint  presentations and/or in Web pages that they create. Students with more advanced skills may use these images to create a time-lapse animation with PowerPoint or FLASH.

Teacher Prep Time

1-2 hours. Teachers should review the Imaging, PowerPoint Presentations, and Web Content Creation tutorials for information on the tech skills that can be used in the preparation of the student project.

Project

Students will view segments of the NASA CONNECT program, Ancient Observatories: Timeless Knowledge to learn more about t he Sun's role in past and present cultures as a timekeeping tool. Working in groups, they will use simple tools to create a working sundial. Students will record their observations with digital imagery. Projects will be presented via PowerPoint or as Web sites.

Assessment/Grading

By answering discussion questions students will demonstrate their understanding of the use of the Sun as a timekeeping tool.  A
