Introduction
Students will work in groups to identify a question relating to an issue or topic of study. This question should be phrased to grab the audience’s attention and create interest in the topic. Centering on the question, students will create a 60-second “kids’ newsbreak” highlighting information that begins to answer the question. Other student products may offer additional information relating to the question. (For example: Web sites)Newsbreaks make use of a variety of media to inform and educate the public. Important information is included to “hook” the audience into wanting to learn more about a particular topic.
Prerequisite Experience
Students should be capable of conducting research online and will demonstrate some knowledge of video production and digital video camera operation. Students should understand brainstorming techniques.Teacher Prep Time
One to two hours Teachers should review the Video Production tutorials.and understand the the operation of a digital video camera. They may need to gain some experience with video editing software, such as iMovie or Adobe Premiere. It would be useful to have the students explore the specific tutorials as they progress through their project.Project
Students will demonstrate their understanding of newsbreaks and video production by submitting a Kids Newsbreak. Students will also demonstrate an understanding of content through their choice of question and highlighted information for the newsbreak.
The teacher may choose to vary the targeted audience for the newsbreak.
When students create newsbreaks for younger children, the challenge is to explain key concepts in simple terms. This tests for a clear understanding of the basic concepts. When students create newsbreaks for students their own age, the challenge is to deepen the understanding of key concepts.
